Gastric bypass surgery:
It is a surgery through which the size of the stomach is reduced by connecting the upper part of the stomach and diverting its path immediately to the small intestine so that the food goes to the upper section only without the lower section, and therefore when the patient eats a little food he feels full immediately as if his stomach was full of food. The process takes between 2 to 4 hours.
Candidates for gastric bypass surgery:
Gastric bypass cannot be performed on anyone, but these conditions must be availabled, the most important of which are:
The weight of the person who wishes to undergo the gastric bypass operation should not be less than 40 kilograms.
He must be in good health and not suffer from any health problem that may be the cause of his weight gain.
To be free from blood clotting problems, which may lead to heavy bleeding during the operation.
A person who suffers from health problems resulting from obesity, such as osteoporosis, and cartilage melting.
A person who has not been able to lose weight through exercise or a balanced diet.
It should be free from some serious diseases, such as heart disease, pressure, diabetes, and a weak acquired immune system, in addition to the absence of any infections with certain viruses such as hepatitis, anemia, and AIDS.
Stages of gastric bypass surgery
The gastric bypass process goes through three important stages:
Anesthesia stage:
In this stage, the patient is given general anesthesia, to avoid feeling any pain during the operation.
Gastric banding stage:
At this stage, the doctor ties the upper part of the stomach, which is a relatively small section that can accommodate 28 grams of food, so that the food is directed directly to it, without going through its large lower section, and therefore the patient will be required to eat small amounts of food.
Diversion stage:
In this stage, the doctor transfers the upper part of the stomach (gastric pouch) directly into the small intestine and connects it with it through a small hole through which food moves from the gastric pouch to the small intestine.
Advantages of gastric bypass surgery:
Patients lose 60% to 80% of their excess weight in the final outcome.
Limits the amount of food patients can eat in one sitting.
Making changes in gut microbes and hormones; This leads to less appetite. In other words, patients feel less hungry.
More than 50% of weight loss remains lost in this type of operation.
